*Successful Grant Submission*

OHSAH and its research partners (University of British Columbia, Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, Interior Health and Northern Health) have been approved for a grant by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. This grant for $1.2 million will fund the Healthy Workplace Initiative through to completion in 2010.

Project Update: Northern Health MSIP Steering Team

Northern Health (NH), in collaboration with OHSAH, Healthcare Benefit Trust (HBT), and WorkSafeBC, formed a Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention (MSIP) Steering Team. This group guides the development and supports the implementation of a continuous improvement system for an MSIP process. The MSIP Steering Team, formed in 2003, includes management and union (HSA, HEU, BCNU, BCGEU) representation, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, community health, program development, nursing, workplace health & safety, and other occupational health and safety professionals. The Steering Team meets in Prince George every three months, and holds teleconferences between meetings.

Within the MSIP Steering Team, two subgroups were formed: the Safe Patient Moving and Assisting working group and the Prevention and Early Active Return-to-Work Safely (PEARS) working group. Both groups function to guide the implementation of pilot programs in NH.

Network for Preventing Violent and Aggressive Behaviour

Two New Resources

Preventing Violent and Aggressive Behaviour Workshop Final Summary
The final summary for the June 7, 2005 Violent and Aggressive Behaviour Prevention workshop is now on the OHSAH website. This document gives the background for the workshop and details the session topics covered. Feedback from these sessions is also included, and will be used by the Provincial Steering Committee to determine program barriers, move initiatives towards provincial standards, and aid in the development of manuals for Best Practice in BC.

Violence in the Emergency Department: A survey of healthcare workers
Hospital emergency departments are recognized as high-risk environments for violence towards healthcare workers. WorkSafeBC launched a study to examine perceived levels of violence in an emergency department and to obtain a definition of violence from personnel. The study also looks at the degree of stress workers experience after a violent incident and their coping and prevention methods. This report from this study is now available on the OHSAH website.

To access these two new resources, visit the Network for Preventing Violent and Aggressive Behaviour section of the OHSAH Website.

Two factors that influence the effectiveness of OH&S training are: administrative components, such as mandatory participation, and delivery components, such as training content. This OSHTip further outlines the specifics of each factor, providing a number of helpful suggestions for successfully implementing an OH&S training program.
