Evaluation and Expansion of Peer Coaching/Mentoring Projects at Vancouver Coastal Health

Funding Agency: WorkSafeBC
Collaborator: Vancouver Coastal Health
Grant received: 2008
Objective: To comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the ceiling lift peer coaching/ mentoring program at VCH.

Training and coaching are important for communicating new programs to staff, and are often included as part of programs intended to decrease work-related injuries. Ceiling lifts have been shown to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSI) in the healthcare sector, and previous research suggests that ceiling lifts are viewed positively by staff. Despite this, there is skepticism in the industry that the lifts are being used to their full potential.

To ensure that staff know how to use the lifts appropriately and to promote higher use of their ceiling lifts, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has developed a peer coaching/mentoring program. A pilot study of the program was well-received and seemed to increase ceiling lift use. As a result, VCH is expanding the program to a few other facilities. The goal of this research project is to build upon the previous pilot study and to more comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of the coaching program, including conducting a cost-benefit analysis.
