Participants will be educated about their roles and responsibilities as JOHSC members and their three basic rights as workers. They will become familiar with the Worker’s Compensation Act, Occupational Health & Safety Regulation, Collective Agreements, and a standard process for Occupational Health & Safety problem-solving. Members learn how to write constructive action plans, recommendations, and committee goals, and will take away templates for committee agendas and minutes.
The value of inspections is clarified in this workshop as participants learn to assess an environment’s health & safety risks, identify hazards and apply principles of control. Attendees will be directed to occupational health & safety resources that will support their post-inspection recommendations. The course concludes with a mock inspection.
Understand when, why and how to conduct a workplace incident investigation in the capacity of the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee. Participants learn to follow multiple factors in an incident, determine controls to address root causes, and develop recommendations and follow-up plans.
Attendees of this workshop will learn to identify and control home environment risks such as ergonomics, chemical hazards, and working alone. Learn to use OHSAH’s Risk Assessment Tool and Resource Guide or your own tools to apply risk assessment. Participants will have opportunities to network and share solutions with other Home & Community Care sector employees.
Being equipped to recognize and distinguish between anxious, aggressive and violent behaviour is crucial to preventing a violent incident from occurring. Participants will learn effective and compassionate methods of dealing with aggression and increase their awareness and confidence in threatening situations, ultimately mitigating risk of injury for themselves and others.
While healthcare makes up only 10% of the province’s workforce, 40% of compensation claims for violence come from healthcare workers. Joint Committee members will learn how to develop their own workplace Violence Prevention Plan by understanding the legal framework of violence in the workplace. To make your workplace safer, participants will study different kinds of violence, learn to do risk assessments, and practice problem-solving hazards.
