Completed Projects
In the past, the Ergonomics Program has supported over 50 distinct ergonomics projects in partnership with healthcare facilities in BC. Projects included ceiling lift evaluations as well as evaluation of risk factor control measures in departments such as laundry, kitchens, laboratories, and maintenance. These projects are organized by the following topic. Project summaries can be found by proceeding to each of these topics.

Assistive Devices and Patient Handling

The premise of the following studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing assistive devices in reducing the risks of musculoskeletal injuries to healthcare workers during various patient handling activities.
  1. Evaluation of the Ceiling Lift Pilot Coaching Program
  2. Ceiling Lifts in Nuclear Medicine
  3. Ceiling Lifts in an Intermediate Care Facility
  4. Evaluating the Effectiveness of Ceiling Lifts in Extended Care
  5. Cost Benefit Analysis of Implementing Ceiling Lifts in Interior Health

  12. Reducing MSI Through an Adaptive Clothing and Dressing Program
  13. Using a Mobilizer Bed to Reduce Risks Associated with Patient Handling

Facility Support Services

Facility Support Services include departments such as Kitchen, Laundry, Housekeeping and Maintenance. The following initiatives entailed identifying ergonomic risk factors in each of those areas and implementing appropriate control measures based on the outcomes of the assessment.

  6. Impact of a Bagless Laundry System on the Risk of Musculoskeletal Injuries
  7. Laundry Cart Modifications
  8. Garbage Disposal Alternatives

Pharmacy & Laboratories

The following initiatives identified ergonomic risk factors in the pharmacy and laboratory workstations as well as their associated tasks. The information would then be used as guidelines to develop control measures in minimizing or eliminating the risks of MSIs.
  1. Development of an Ergonomic Workstation for Histology Lab Technologists
  2. Injury Prevention in Microbiology and Core Labs
  3. Reducing the Repetitive Strain Injuries in Pharmacy
